Material Testing

Mechanical Testing Services

Veryst has extensive expertise in mechanical testing of a wide range of engineering materials.   Veryst has the unique ability to design and carry out a test program for calibration of an advanced nonlinear material model from our PolyUMod library, including testing under different environmental and service conditions (i.e. low or high temperatures over a range of strain rates and stress histories).  Veryst also has extensive experience in designing specialized testing and test-programs for hysteresis, creep, relaxation, viscoplasticity, and impact.

Materials and Testing Types

Veryst’s extensive material testing and calibration experience covers a broad range of material types, including:
        Elastomers/rubbers
Thermoplastics, including materials for high strength and wear applications, such as PEEK and UHMWPE
        Foams (open and closed cell)
        Fluoropolymers, such as Teflon
        Biomaterials
            Silicone rubbers
            Absorbable materials (poly-lactic acid (PLA))
Materials for implant wear surfaces (UHMWPE)
Bioplastics, such as biodegradable/compostable poly-lactic acid (PLA) and bio-sourced PET
        Hydrogels
        Woven and braided fabrics
        Particulate and fiber-reinforced composites
        Adhesives and tapes

Tests include a wide variety of formats under a range of environmental conditions, including:
Uniaxial tension and compression at low and high strain rates
        3 or 4 point bending
        Single or double-lap shear
        Low-cycle fatigue
        Relaxation
        Hysteresis
Long-term creep behavior (up to several months)
        Compression set characterization
        Volumetric compression

Most tests can be performed at temperatures from -80C (-112F) to 280C (536F).
Additional testing includes:
        Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA)
        High cycle fatigue testing
High-pressure/high temperature testing of polymers (HP/HT)

Specialized Testing Services

Veryst realizes the intimate connection between material processing and mechanical behavior.  As a result, it is frequently desirable to test material taken from an as-manufactured component.  Similarly, Veryst also recognizes that there are situations where standard test specimen geometries and sizes may not be available. (For example, when looking to evaluate the materials used in a competitor’s product.)  Veryst is well-suited to adapt to these situations and extract test specimens whose properties may be evaluated using a combination of testing and Finite Element Analysis.

Material Model Calibration

Results from a combination of experimental tests can be used to calibrate any of the built-in material models in commercial finite element software such as SIMULIA Abaqus, Ansys or COMSOL Multiphysics, or an accurate advanced, nonlinear material model from Veryst’s PolyUmod software.
