Elastomers

Test programs

Elastomers and natural rubbers exhibit complex responses to mechanical loading, and accurately capturing that data for simulation requires accurate test data.  Veryst has extensive experience developing and executing test plans for natural and synthetic rubbers.  Some of our most recommended test procedures are listed below.  Veryst can also recommend an appropriate combination of test program and material model if you are unsure of what test program is required for your application.

Elastomers

Note that all the tests below can be performed at reduced or elevated temperatures.  We recommend 3-5 repeats for each strain rate and temperature combination.

program Id  Description Suitable for characterizing and Modeling
EL001 Low rate cyclic tension Rate-independent, finite-strain response; loading is dominated by tension or shear
EL002 Low rate cyclic compression Rate-independent, finite-strain response; loading is dominated by compression
EL003 Low rate planar tension Rate-independent shear response; loading is dominated by shear
EL004 Low rate lap shear testing Rate-independent shear response; loading is dominated by shear
EL005 Creep or stress relaxation Medium- and long-term creep/relaxation response of elastomers in either tension or compression
EL006 Dynamic mechanical analysis Viscoelastic response over a wide range of frequencies or temperatures; tension, shear, compression, and bending modes available
EL007 High rate tension Rate-dependent tensile response; 10-500/s engineering strain rates available; loading is dominated by tension
EL008 High rate compression Rate-dependent compressive response; 10-1500/s engineering strain rates available; loading is dominated by compression
EL009 High rate shear Rate-dependent shear response; 10-500/s engineering strain rates available; loading is dominated by shear
EL010 Compression set Permanent set in materials, ASTM D575
EL011 Ball impact test Rate-dependent multi-axial impact testing; excellent material model validation experiment
EL012 Small punch test Low rate multiaxial validation experiment; large strains possible
