December 2026 – Smarter Testing, Better Models: How to Approach Mechanical Testing for FEA

cyclic tension testing and modeling of polymer

Free, One-hour Webinar

Accurate material models are the foundation of reliable finite element simulations, yet the testing data used to calibrate them is often poorly suited for the task because engineers over rely on testing standards.  Standard mechanical test methods were designed for material characterization and quality control, not for feeding the complex constitutive models used in modern FEA. Thus, in most cases compliance with testing standards is insufficient for material model calibration as the standards rarely capture the deformation modes, strain rates, or stress states that materials experience in service.

We will describe a practical framework for going beyond testing standards to designing custom mechanical test plans that efficiently gather the data needed for material model calibration.  We will share examples of how custom test fixtures and purpose-built experiments can dramatically improve constitutive model calibration quality for polymers and adhesives.  Attendees will leave with a better eye for identifying gaps in their test data and more confidence for designing experiments that close them.

Mark Oliver, Ph.D., is a Principal at Veryst Engineering.  Dr. Oliver has expertise in the materials science, solid mechanics, and failure analysis of engineering materials, including adhesives.  He applies his knowledge of chemical and microstructural characterization, mechanical testing, and finite element analysis to issues of materials selection, mechanical design, and root cause determination of material failures.  Prior to joining Veryst, Dr. Oliver developed new adhesives for the electronics packaging industry at the Dow Chemical Company.  He holds a Ph.D. from the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University.

Learning Objectives

The goal of this webinar is to equip engineers with the knowledge to design non-standard mechanical tests to collect data needed to calibrate material models for plastic, polymers, and adhesives. By the end of the class, you will have an improved understanding of:

  • The strengths and limitations of mechanical testing standards in the context of FEA
  • The strengths and limitations of technical data sheets as FEA input
  • Strategies for designing mechanical testing plans to inform FEA material model calibration
