thinning and breakup of viscoelastic fluid filaments

Next week we’re heading to the Society of Rheology (SoR) 97th Annual Meeting, October 25–29 at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza in Boston!

Veryst will be at the meeting all week. We’d welcome the chance to talk about how we can support product and process development with viscoelastic fluid mechanics, computational rheology, multiphysics simulation, and material testing and modeling.

Veryst Co-chairs the Applied Rheology for Industrial Applications Sessions

Dr. Joseph Barakat is co-organizing and chairing the Applied Rheology for Industrial Applications sessions, featuring industry leaders in foodstuffs, cosmetics, automation, batteries, additive manufacturing, and polymer processing. These sessions cover how rheology informs real manufacturing and product decisions, from formulation to processing to performance.

All sessions take place in Copley/Kenmore (Lobby Level) at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza:

  • Tuesday, October 27: AR-I 9:50–11:50am, AR-II 1:30–3:10pm, AR-III 3:45–5:45pm
  • Wednesday, October 28: AR-IV 9:50–11:50am, AR-V 1:30–2:50pm, AR-VI 3:45–5:45pm
  • Thursday, October 29: AR-VII 8:40–10:00am, AR-VIII 10:25am–12:05pm

See the online program for speakers and abstracts.

New Case Study: Predicting Thinning and Breakup of Viscoelastic Fluids

Ahead of SoR, we’re sharing a new case study on Predicting Thinning and Breakup of Viscoelastic Fluids. Precision dispensing in pharmaceutical injection, inkjet printing, additive manufacturing, and microelectronics depends on clean, predictable filament breakup. Viscoelastic fluids make that breakup hard to predict. In this work, we:

  • Built CFD simulations of the Capillary Breakup Extensional Rheometry (CaBER) experiment, calibrated from shear rheometry data and validated against published CaBER measurements for dilute polystyrene solutions.
  • Predicted how a small amount of dissolved polymer extends filament lifetime roughly fourfold compared with an inelastic fluid of the same viscosity.
  • Predicted how increasing polymer molecular weight elongates breakup times by orders of magnitude, giving teams a predictive tool for reformulation and batch-to-batch variation.

Ask us about this work at the meeting.

Meet Veryst at SoR 2026

Veryst Engineering is the premier engineering consulting firm for companies that need certainty. Your products, processes, and technologies must work in the real world. Our specialized expertise spans physics, engineering, and materials science.

We understand product physics at a deep level. We know not just that something works, but why and how. That lets us deliver answers quickly, so you can get to market faster. Our state-of-the-art mechanical test lab and industry-leading simulation tools let us validate and troubleshoot models under realistic conditions.

A small, elite team, we’ve become the go-to firm for some of the world’s best-known global brands. At SoR 2026, we’d welcome the chance to talk through your current challenges, such as:

  • Complex fluid flow and formulation rheology, including dispensing, filling, coating, injectability, and needle clogging
  • Viscoelastic and non-Newtonian CFD, including filament thinning and breakup, droplet formation, and inkjet printing
  • Microfluidics and multiphase flow
  • Material testing and modeling, including custom testing to calibrate simulation models

Whether you’re troubleshooting an existing process or designing a new one, we’d like to hear about it. We transfer all methods, models, and data to our clients. Our clients own the IP generated as part of our engagements.
