Compression Set Testing

Elastomers, rubbers, biomaterials, and thermoplastics typically exhibit permanent deformation due to prolonged applied loads.  This behavior can critically affect the function of a component and is often encountered in gasket or sealing applications.  Applied strain level, time compressed, and temperature can all significantly influence the compression set of a material.  The compression set tests can then be used in a material model calibration to ensure permanent set is accurately captured for finite element simulations.

Veryst typically uses ASTM standard D395 to test the permanent deformation of rubbers, though custom test programs are available.  The figure above shows an image of a compression set fixture that Veryst uses to test elastomers and thermoplastics.
