Electromagnetic Modeling and Design of an Actuator

Dr. Nirmal Paudel presented a free, one-hour webinar titled "Electromagnetic Modeling and Design of an Actuator" on January 26, 2023.

An electromagnetic actuator is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy in the form of linear or rotatory motion.  The motion can be used, for example, to vibrate a speaker diaphragm, open and close an electromagnetic valve, or open and close an electromagnetic relay.

A typical electromagnetic actuator consists of various components including coils, magnets, magnetic material, and other mechanical and electronic components for control.  Designing a complex actuator system involving these components can be challenging.  Engineers and scientists can use finite element analysis (FEA) software to design and optimize these systems more efficiently.

In this webinar, Dr. Paudel demonstrated a workflow for designing an electromagnetic actuator using the COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software and its parametric sweep and optimization tools in both static and transient simulations.
