Testing and Modeling of Polymers: High Rate and Traditional Testing

Two-Day, In-Person Training Class

Design engineers often use polymers in impact protection applications, and these designs experience high strain rates during impact.  Polymers are viscoplastic by nature, so the material response is highly dependent on the strain rate.  Collecting data on your polymer (elastomer, thermoplastic, foam, composite, etc.) at relevant strain rates is critical to having a well-designed product.  Learn the available test methods with live demonstrations of high rate test methods, traditional testing, and material model calibration.

Course Instructor

Dr. Sean Teller is a Principal at Veryst Engineering. Dr. Teller has extensive experience in testing and modeling the mechanical behavior of materials. His expertise includes measuring the response of materials at impact rates and capturing the nonlinear behavior of advanced, engineering materials. His experience also includes characterizing the nonlinear, finite deformation response of materials, focusing largely on viscoplasticity, biomaterials, and fracture mechanics.

Dr. Teller earned his Ph.D. from Brown University in Solid Mechanics, with research on high frequency, nonlinear viscoelasticity. 

Prerequisites

This training class is intended for people with some experience either performing experiments or running a finite element program.  While some experience with one or the other is recommended, you do not need to have expertise in both testing and modeling.  Class topics are intended to be understood by simulation engineers, test engineers, and materials scientists.  We will use examples from Abaqus, Ansys, and LS-DYNA in the class, but topics will be applicable to all FE codes.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this class, you will be able to:

  • design a relevant high strain rate experimental test program for a new polymer material and identify what experimental tests are necessary and sufficient for material model calibration
  • understand the strengths and weaknesses of various material models with respect to predicting both the slow and high strain rate response
  • use experimental data to calibrate the selected material model, and perform impact simulations using an FE code
  • recognize limitations of your test methods and test plans for your polymer, and what that may mean for your simulation or design

    • Polymer characteristics, rate dependence, and typical behavior
  • Modern mechanical testing of polymers; overview of different experimental testing techniques for different polymer classes and test methods
  • High rate testing techniques for polymers
  • Continuum mechanics: review of key concepts
  • Hyperelastic material models
  • Viscoelastic material behavior and models
  • Advanced viscoplastic material models
  • Review of metal plasticity theory: strengths and limitations of metal plasticity models
  • Advanced finite element simulations of different classes of polymers
  • Material parameter extraction techniques using MCalibration

Course Materials

Training class notes will be provided in an electronic format.  Notes are for personal use, and cannot be modified, shared, or redistributed.

It is not necessary to have Abaqus, ANSYS, COMSOL Multiphysics, LS-DYNA, or MSC.Marc installed for the class, though we will work on examples in the class using these software programs.

The fee for this two-day course is $1800.

Deadline for registration is Friday, April 26, 2024.

Registration after this date will incur a late registration fee of $400.

Cancellation Policy

Veryst reserves the right to reject registrations and to cancel a training class based on class size.  A full refund will be made if a class is canceled.  If a participant cancels a registration more than 5 days before the class then an 80% refund will be given.  There is no refund for cancellations during the last 5 days before the class.
